Burkburnett edged Iowa Park by one point Saturday to capture the regional powerlifting meet title. The Bulldogs, who finished with 35 points, and Hawks had three lifters win their divisions and five advance to the state meet.
“It sets us up to be in line to win another one if everything goes well,” said Burkburnett coach Jason Thomas, referring to Burkburnett’s 2009 state championship.
Lorenzo Barnes broke his own meet record by lifting a combined 1,945 pounds in the super heavyweight division. His old record was an 1,880. Burkburnett’s Preston King won the 132-pound division with a lift total of 1,140, while Ryne Cozby won gold with a 1,325 in the 181-pound division.
Other Bulldog state qualifiers were Scott Dobbins — who broke the regional squat record with a 700 en route to a second-place total of 1,675 — and Peter Loftus, who took third in the 114 class with a 905.
Like Burkburnett, three Iowa Park lifters left with gold medals.
Justin Thacker won the 242 class with a total of 1,680, five pounds more than Dobbins.
Caleb England captured the 275-pound title, while Dai Le was first in the 198 class. Reid Graves finished behind Barnes in the super heavyweight division, while Caleb Watson took second in the 165-pound class.

Burkburnett Bulldogs vs China Spring Cougars

Wow, This Saturday the Burkburnett Bulldogs will face off with the China Spring Cougars. I know that our team is super strong and super fast. Our powerlifters on the team, will be the keys to winning in the trenches. With our state champ lifter Lorenzo leading the way and reigning US APF Champion Dobbins, we are sure to give to them a whooping. We will play with class, and integrity, but it should be a good game.
See yall in Aledo, TX, kickout time is 6 PM. Sat Nov. 22, 2008. Go DAWGS!
